Geonomy is the earth, tagged.
Geonomy stands on some some tall shoulders. A key source is Wikipedia. Geonomy currently contains tags and descriptions for about 50,000 locations from the English language version of Wikipedia. Yellow symbols are linked to Wikipedia pages. Other important sources of point data include the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and the United States Geological Survey.
Geonomy does not aim to be a warehouse of map information but rather an index to place descriptions which already exist on the web. Geonomy does aim to help expand the list of existing descriptions, improve the geographic locations of existing features, and to help improvements make it back into Wikipedia and other repositories.

With over 400,000 places of interest to explore, this shouldn't be hard. You can find places using our full text search (at the upper left), categories (above middle), or tags (next to categories). Each of these will return places as yellow (wikipedia articles), purple (user added places), and red (other places) triangles on the map. Click a triangle to find out more about that place. If you get to your favorite place and we don't have anything yet... you can add a new place. Just click on the map at the correct location, then click the "add a place" link on the control bar to the right. All we ask for is an email address (in case we have questions about your place and never for anything else), a name for the place, a description of the place (can contain HTML), and an optional URL to a page about the place. Frequently this is a Wikipedia page, but does not have to be.
According to Wikipedia: A tag is a (relevant) keyword or term associated with or assigned to a piece of information (like picture, article, or video clip), thus describing the item and enabling keyword-based classification of information it is applied to. Geonomy allows you to tag any place by clicking on it, then adding the tag keyword(s) in the form shown below the place description and clicking the Add Tag button.
When you have the map showing exactly what you want, just click the link to this page link above to create a permalink that saves your current map center, zoom level and last tag, category, or full text search. Then grab the URL from your browser's address bar and save it as a bookmark, mail it to a friend, etc.
